German warship blasts Darth Vader theme on Thames

The German navy made a memorable entrance in London this week, blasting the iconic Imperial March (Darth Vader’s Theme) theme as one of its warships moved up the River Thames.

Curious onlookers watched as the German vessel was slowly towed past Butler’s Wharf on the south bank, close to Tower Bridge.

The Braunschweig F260, a German warship, played the well-known piece of music from the Star Wars series as it passed by, much to the confusion and amusement of Londoners.

Social media footage of the event shows the ship being pulled backwards, while sailors on deck dressed in blue and navy uniforms. It is not known why the ship was being pulled from the aft.

The stunt appears to have been a spot of German humour. A spokesperson from the German Navy told the BBC the music had “no deeper message” and “the commander can choose the music freely”.

The Braunschweig F260, commissioned in 2008, is the flagship of the German navy’s new Class K130 corvette fleet. It was in London for a training and supply stop.

On Friday (16 August 2024), Tower Bridge was raised to allow the warship to pass through and dock alongside the HMS Belfast.

The ship has since departed from London and was spotted moored in Plymouth on Wednesday morning (21 August 2024).
