Overmarine Group announces death of Giuseppe Balducci
Overmarine has announced the death of its founder and president, Giuseppe Balducci.
Born in Limite sull’Arno in 1937, Giuseppe Balducci moved to Viareggio as a child. At aged 16 he started work as an electrician in the Picchiotti shipyard where he remained until 1971, when the shipyard went bankrupt.
In 1971 he founded Elettromare, which still creates naval electrical systems today. It was a cutting-edge company that created electrical panels and systems for boats and led Balducci to travel widely in Italy and the United States. These tours gave him the opportunity to see how boats were evolving, into fibreglass. This inspired him to build a factory in Massarosa (LU) for the construction of fibreglass yachts.
As numerous shipyards entrusted the factory with hull construction, the Overmarine shipyard was founded. It soon specialised in the construction of fast maxi-open boats. Eighty five of the first maxi-open produced, the Mangusta 80, were built.
It’s said that the Overmarine group is the result of the tireless enthusiasm of a reserved man, with subtle irony, who believed in a great dream. Active until the end, Balducci personally followed the construction of a new production plant in Pisa, which will be inaugurated in the next few days. He leaves behind his wife Bruna, his children Maurizio and Katia, his beloved grandchildren and all his collaborators who, together with him, built ships that have become icons for the nautical world.
