Nomen’s ‘pure’ cleats developed for barefoot friendly decks
Nomen has announced that it’s developed its platform cleat, into a ‘pure’ version. This is the next iteration of the Cleat IV which disappears flush below deck and allows doors to close smoothly without any parts sticking out above deck level.
Axel Hoppenhaus, Nomen’s designer and CEO sat down with MIN at Metstrade. He says the idea for the company’s cleat range came from his original aspirations to be a yacht designer. That career didn’t quite work out as he’d planned, so he decided to improve something on a yacht.
“Cleats are very simple welded parts from stainless steel. I thought this could be done better. Only one Italian company built a flush cleat at the time I started.”
Hoppenhaus attended his first Metstrade in 2002 with one cleat. Now Nomen has four different cleat concepts, several sizes, two material versions (plus the ability to customise) and two colourways: silver and black.
The previous version of Nomen’s platform cleat garnered a lot of interest and Hoppenhaus is hoping for the same from its wooden version.
“It’s mainly made for tender mooring on platforms, bathing platforms and doors of boat garages. They [crew] fold open the boat garage and the boat comes out and needs to be moored. We’ve made a special cleat which is totally flush and can be recessed very easily into the hull of the door.”
Nomen’s end customers, Hoppenhaus explains, are sailing boats manufacturers from 10-80 metres and motor boats 8-100 metre plus. He believes the new wooden flush cleat will be interesting for super yacht boat builders especially. “They want pure design on a boat.”
The ‘pure’ cleat now comes in a choice of two plate finishes – stainless steel and wood (tesumo wood components). The cover plate, which protects the cleat, can be customised with patterns, emblems or even coats of arms.
As well as its elegance and flexibility, Nomen says its integrated and lightweight product adds to stability and safety onboard as well as being barefoot-friendly.
Nomen is part of Deutsche Yachten, a working group that consists of over 60 hand-picked German companies that are active in the construction and outfitting of yachts over 24 metres.
