Icebergs have been confirmed by CLS – the organisation retained by the Vendée Globe to monitor ice which uses satellites and teams of experts to monitor the ice from space.
In recent days the the isolated ice has been seen north of the Antarctic Exclusion Zone on the Vendée Globe course. On high alert, the race management in collaboration with the experts, warned the skippers. The teams are working hard to follow the ice detected and keep the skippers informed.
Between yesterday evening and early today Thursdy three skippers saw the icebergs which are bing monitored from from space. Sébastien Marsset (FOUSSIER) at 18:15 UTC and Éric Bellion (STAND AS ONE – Altavia) at 20:00 UTC on 01/01/2025. Skipper Conrad Colman (MS Amlin) spotted an iceberg at 01:05 UTC on 02/01/2025.
Surveillance by CLS – a long-standing partner of the race – is ongoing. Mobilized 24/7, the race management team is coordinating with the company’s experts to ensure a constant relay for the sailors and ensure their safety. This morning, the group from Tanguy Le Turquais (Lazare, 21st) to Conrad Colman (MS Amlin, 29th) is still in the zone of confirmed detections.
The last sailor to have seen an iceberg on the Vendée Globe course was skipper Samantha Davies, in 2008.
