A red and white engine known as Cummins' new QSK38 Stage V power solution

Cummins is launching its new QSK38 Stage V power solution – more commonly known as an engine – for vessels operating on European inland waterways. The Stage V certified QSK38 delivers 1400 hp (1044 kW) at 1800 rpm.

Cédric Merveillaud, a Cummins director, says its the newest addition for the company’s next-generation engines. It’s been specifically designed to complement the B4.5 and X15 products already certified for Stage V emissions (one of the most stringent emissions regulations in Europe).

“The QSK38 is a proven Cummins engine, established for many demanding applications and now fully EU certified,” says Merveillaud. “This in-house developed solution comes with an aftertreatment package that is compact and easy to integrate. This new package delivers optimum performance, proven reliability and fuel efficiency to operators while adhering to the latest emissions standards.” The aftertreatment system has been specifically designed to fit easily into vessel engine rooms and to allow for easy maintenance operations and service access.

The new engine can be used as new installation, or for repowers, and is covered by Cummins warranty and aftersales through its commercial marine dealer network in Europe.

“Cummins engine technology paired with our expertise in the marine market enables us to provide a premium solution for inland waterway transport that meets the unique needs of our marine customers,” says Merveillaud.

In March last year, Cummins and Danfoss Power Solutions’ Editron division announced they’d partnered to develop a hybrid marine solution for the global maritime market, saying that customers are looking for streamlined ways to meet complex regulations and decarbonisation goals.
