On 2 June, the first day of the bank holiday weekend celebrating the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, canal boat holiday operator Anglo Welsh is hosting open days at five of its narrowboat hire bases, offering people the chance to try canal boating for free.

The events, which will run from 10am – 4pm, offer visitors the chance to take a free trip on a skippered day boat, and to find out more about canal boat holidays.

Anglo Welsh Open Days will take place at:

–           Tardebigge on the Worcestershire & Birmingham Canal, Worcestershire;

–           Wootton Wawen on the Stratford Canal, Warwickshire;

–           Bunbury on the Shropshire Union Canal, Cheshire;

–           Great Haywood on the Trent & Mersey Canal, Staffordshire;

–           Whixall on the Prees Branch of the Llangollen Canal, Shropshire.

Emma Lovell, bookings manager for Anglo Welsh, said: “We are looking forward to welcoming visitors to our open days. No booking is required and trips will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.

“Research shows that people feel happier and more relaxed by the water, so a day afloat on Britain’s beautiful inland waterways is a great way to spend time with friends or family, enjoying stretches of beautiful countryside and a pub lunch or picnic along the way.

“Full tuition is included in our day boat hire package, so it is a great opportunity for those new to canal boating to get the hang of steering, mooring up and working the locks.”

Boat hire prices start at £635 for a short break (three or four nights) on a boat for four people, £875 for a week.
